Belts, a few notions to help you find your way...

Did you know ?

Belts are an indispensable part of our modern means of locomotion and machinery. It is used to transmit movement.

Its flexible material makes it particularly fragile. That's why it's important to check it at least once a year. Take advantage of your engine overhaul, for example, to take a look !

How do you know if it needs changing, or if it's just loose ?

We tell you all about it !

Wear check :

To find out how worn the belt is, it's advisable to look at the mechanism that integrates it. When the belt enters the pulley's circular recess (the pulley groove), the friction surfaces should be on the sides, not at the bottom.

Checking tension :

Apply pressure to the belt between 2 pulleys; the sag should not exceed the thickness of the belt.

Causes :

Depending on its model and use, the belt wears out more or less quickly. This is why an annual overhaul is necessary. If your belt is cracked, it should be replaced immediately.
In short, the causes of belt wear depend on both the model and the context of use. Below, we present the different cases of wear :

Cleanliness of the wedge. If the belt rotates in water or oil, it wears out more quickly.
The force exerted. If the belt is not stretched enough, it will slip and ice up.
Pulley surface condition. Rusty pulleys wear belts more easily.

Changing the belt

Replacing your belt is fairly straightforward, provided you have the right model. You need to know the dimensions of the belt, i.e. :

  • Cross-section
  • Outer length
  • Inside length
